A Tooth Fairy Tale Film Analysis: Animated Adventure with a Touch of Kid-Appropriate Tween Love Story

Throughout this animated adventure for preteens, the world of fairies focuses on collecting baby teeth of sleeping youngsters and placing gold under their pillows. Board-riding teenage rebel fairy Van (voiced by Booboo Stewart) is less than thrilled about spending his future to collecting baby teeth—a feeling that’s completely understandable. He is just a bit more curious about the financial workings behind it all: the fairies hand over the molars to unseen goblins, who provide metal as payment. But Van’s curiosity is piqued when he catches sight of a goblin (played by Larkin Bell), who proves to be not at all the hideous gnome he had imagined.

A Forbidden Bond and Shared Threat

Everything is prepared for an exciting quest with a light sprinkling of teen romance (though it’s perfectly appropriate for children). The fairy and goblin groups are separated from each other, and nothing fuels the excitement of secrecy to unite beings as one. The two species portrayed in the film are incredibly similar, yet each holds prejudiced beliefs about the opposite side. Fairies are supposed to be entitled sorts, given to stealing whatever they fancy, while goblins are allegedly dim-witted, smelly, and backward, but are in fact intelligent and advanced in technology.

Of course, such a setup requires a common enemy to unite against, and that need is met by a group of vicious spiders, with voices by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. They make no secret about their intentions: they aim to devour the goblins and fairies, and they make for quite savage, though not especially competent, villains.

Target Audience and Final Thoughts

You won’t find very many children’s animations targeting the kind of audience that is starting to experience first crushes, but aren’t yet mature enough for whatever teenagers are watching in lieu of Twilight. Should your youngster is in the right age bracket, it probably won’t to be their next all-time fave, but you could do worse.

A Tooth Fairy Tale releases in Scottish cinemas starting October 10 and the rest of the UK from 24 October.
