Diving into a Unusual Steam Demo: Controlling a Poop in a Mission to Arrive at the Toilet

Steam Next Fest is currently underway, and players have discovered plenty of interesting creations from small studios. But, one stands out for its unconventional concept. Named Unko Technica, this old-school styled jumping adventure includes a character that is literally a dung striving to travel to a toilet. For those curious, "Unko" is Japanese for "poop."

Player controls is straightforward: you only need a jump control. In 150 stages, encounter tough enemies and access a market to purchase skins for your fecal avatar.

Plan your actions carefully, as a wrong move means starting over. Leap using air pockets to propel the poop upward, cross disappearing platforms, and touch triggers to reveal hidden paths. Collect UN-KOINS for buying challenging game content in which gameplay gets crazy.

In terms of design, the demo shows off eye-catching level designs and catchy soundtrack. The simple art of morphing geometric shapes evokes memories of gamers of beloved games like Earthbound.

Although hard to name previous releases where you control a dung character, interactive entertainment have long included scatological themes. As an illustration, in Death Stranding, you can create throwables from character droppings. Examples include Palworld and Ark: Survival Evolved use manure as fertilizer. Unsurprisingly, such content is present heavily in the adventure The Stick of Truth.

Despite its silly concept, Unko Technica has already garnered impressive recognition, including taking top honors at Bandai Namco's indie contest in 2023. This trial version is accessible now on Steam, with the full game set to arrive on computers this November.
